A GenX Girls’ Trip to St. Kitts: Snickertinis, Sargassum, and a Dinner Worth the Climb

Four girlfriends. Four nights. One very loose cover story about visiting a daughter at vet school.

Let’s be honest about why four GenX moms really booked a flight to St. Kitts: we needed a break, and “checking on the kid at Ross Vet School” was a far more acceptable line to say out loud than “I have not had an uninterrupted nap in eighteen years.”

This wasn’t a sightseeing trip. It wasn’t a bucket-list, pack-every-hour kind of itinerary. It was four nights of pool chairs, trivia nights, good food, and zero alarms set before 9am — exactly what busy moms in the in-between years actually need from a long weekend away.

We stayed four nights at the St. Kitts Marriott Beach Resort, Casino and Spa, in a two-bedroom Vacation Club villa. Clean, comfortable, a little dated around the edges, but the extra space made it worth every penny — a real living room, a kitchen to stock up in, and enough room for four grown women to actually spread out instead of living out of suitcases on top of each other.

6:00 AM
Early arrivals at the airport for our 7:10am flight. With no direct flights on a Monday (this was a mid-week getaway), we had to connect through Miami. Grateful for the American Airlines Admirals Club – happiness is traveling with friends who have status!

2:00 PM
Landed in St. Kitts and breezed through immigration. We had all downloaded the e-Border app and completed our Travel Authorisations in advance. Grabbed a cab right outside for a 15 minute ride to the hotel for check-in. Grabbed lunch at the poolside restaurant. The girls love the Grilled Pineapple Salads with blackened fish.

5:00 PM
Next stop: Ram’s grocery across the street for four nights’ worth of snacks, drinks, and essentials. Having a stocked kitchen is the single best thing you can do for a group villa stay.

7:00 PM
Dinner at the on-property Pizza Shack — meat lovers pizza, zero guilt, early lights out after a brutally early travel day. No shame in that game.

10:00 AM
Straight to the pool. Frosty beverages appeared immediately. Made new friends from Colorado and, naturally, folks who turned out to live near us back home — because that’s just how vacation friendships work.

1:00 PM
Friendly game of resort volleyball. We clobbered the other team. Not that we’re competitive or anything.

2:30 PM
Food trivia. With a certified foodie in the crew, there was never any doubt we were walking away with the “You’re a Winner” Marriott cup.

7:00 PM
Cabbed off-property to Marshall’s for dinner — incredible views, even better seafood, and a quietly smuggled-in birthday dessert for one member of the group whose birthday was, technically, in March. We don’t make the rules, we just celebrate when we can.

9:30 PM
Back to the resort lobby bar for Snickertinis. Colleen raved about them all trip — she was right. Quick casino stop, then called it a night.

9:00 AM
Slow morning. Iced mocha from the lobby cafe for me turned into an unplanned Cappuccino Muffin — coffee-laced, chocolate chip-loaded, gooey in the middle, and genuinely one of the best muffins I’ve had in my life. Some splurges are just worth it.

11:00 AM
Sargassum had taken over the resort beach, so the Marriott ran free shuttles to Frigate Bay Beach about a mile down the road. Quick warning: that black sand gets hot. Keep your flip-flops on or accept your fate.

12:00 PM
Lunch at the Monkey Bar — Sexy Monkey cocktails of genuinely mysterious origin, World Cup on the TV, and beach bar food that over-delivered. Conch fritters, burrito bowls, a chicken wrap, fajitas. They bring a torch to the table to ward off flies, which tells you everything and nothing at the same time.

6:00 PM
More World Cup at the hotel bar, then dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe across the street. Menu was missing a few items, but the service was excellent.

10:00 AM
Back to the pool. Reconnected with our Colorado friends. Local St. Kitts trivia — we were slightly disadvantaged by having done zero actual touring, but had a lot of laughs.

7:00 PM
Dinner at Orchid Bay — and the highlight of the entire trip.

An open-air, family-style Italian restaurant perched on the other side of Timothy Hill. You cab to the base parking lot, where the restaurant’s own valet van picks you up for a short but genuinely steep ride up the mountain. Before you even board the van, they ask what complimentary cocktail you’d like waiting at the top.

Dinner is family-style with the menu pre-selected in advance — our friend Colleen had handled all of it ahead of time, which made the whole evening effortless. Amazing appetizers, brick-oven pizzas, fresh pasta, cannolis made to order. A view that made the climb completely worth it. A lounge and photo backdrop below the dining area for anyone who wants the proof.

10:00 PM
Rolled back to the villa thoroughly stuffed. Low-key, pajama-clad last night before the flight home Friday.

My angle for this trip was simple: absolutely nothing was required of me except showing up and relaxing. No schedules, no tours, no one asking what’s for dinner. After years of being the person who plans everything for everyone, handing that job to a Marriott villa and a group chat felt genuinely radical.

What surprised me most was how little we actually needed. Ram’s grocery across the street stocked the villa on night one. The lobby cafe produced the single best muffin I’ve eaten in recent memory. The Marriott pool delivered trivia wins, volleyball glory, and new friends from Colorado and — of course — someone who lives twenty miles from us back home. What are the chances? Well, given how often that happens I guess pretty good!

The real revelation was Orchid Bay. I came in not expecting much from an Italian restaurant on a Caribbean mountainside, and I left having eaten one of the best meals of the year. A complimentary cocktail upon arrival van ride up the mountain was icing on the cake.

What was Al’s feedback?

We came for the sunshine, the beaches, and to check-in on our favorite vet student. We left with a reminder that life’s best memories rarely come from trying to do more—they come from giving yourself permission to do less.
